JERUSALEM: INSTALLATION OF A NEW PATRIARCH
The Vatican Radio
The Catholic Church in the Holy Land has got a new patriarch. It is the 68-year-old Abp Fouad Twai from Jordan.
Abp Michel Sabbah went into retirement and handed over the crosier to his successor. In the process, he officially finished his 20-year ministry as the Latin patriarch of the Church in Jesus homeland. A thanksgiving Eucharist during which the patriarch handed over the sign of arch-pastoral authority was celebrated in the Agony Basilica in Gethsemane.
The retiring patriarch thanked all the people who served in the patriarchal diocese: apostolic delegates and nuncios who represented the Holy Father, coadjutor bishops and vicars-general as well as all the priests and religious congregations. He thanked the priests for their faithfulness and devoted work in the parishes and the faithful for their prayers and love they showed during all the years of his service. Many priests, nuns and faithful people from the Jerusalem parish and the surrounding villages participated in the Holy Mass. Afterwards, there was a reception for the retiring patriarch Sabbah.
Abp Fouad Twai, the new Latin patriarch of the Holy Land, was officially led to the Resurrection Basilica in Jerusalem on 22nd June. On the 23rd June he celebrated the inaugural Holy Mass.
