QUEBEC: THE DAY OF AFRICA
The Vatican Radio
The penultimate day of the International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec was guided by the motto: "Testify the Eucharist in the world". It was devoted to the Church in Africa.
The morning catechesis was preached by Cardinal Christian Wiyghan Tumi, the Archbishop of Doul in Cameroon. He was talking to more than 12 thousand participants about how to testify the Eucharist in todays world. Cardinal Tumi is a member of the Congregation of the Evangelization of Peoples. In Africa he is well known as a faithful human rights defender.
Marguerite Barankitse also shared her testimony of faith. She has been seeking reconciliation and peace in her country for many years. She is the founder of the so-called House of Peace Maison Shalom, which helped 50 thousand children from Burundi.
In the afternoon there was a devout teenagers' vigil.
At the end of the 49th International Eucharistic Congress we asked the host of the congress, Cardinal Marc Ouellet, about the first fruits it has borne.
"The process of preparation itself is a great gift of the Eucharistic Congress", said Cardinal Ouellet. "I decided to set up a lower seminary in order to awake priestly vocation. The Congress is an event which, with Gods help, will be continued during the time of Advent. We need a real Sending of the Holy Spirit, Eucharistic Sending of the Holy Spirit.
We experience the joy of faith which provides our lives with real sense and hope to take up the obligation of serving our brothers and sisters. This event is a renaissance for our culture: the culture of life, faith and hope" the Archbishop of Quebec added.
